Fresh air, sun-burned noses and rosy cheeks.  Isn’t it wonderful that the best experiences are quite free as a rule?  Here are five ideas for wonderful experiences in Nature that you can take home free and clear from your visit to Himmerland’s West Coast.

Vilsted Sø — Northern Jutland’s  largest fresh-water lake

Only a stone’s throw from Himmerland’s West Coast is Vilsted Sø, northern Jutland’s largest fresh-water lake.  It lies in a beautiful recreation area where you can rent canoes or rowboats or fish and observe the abundant bird population all year long.  A nice network of paths has been laid around the lake, which makes it easy to both walk or cycle – or ride a horse.  This experience can be made more perfect by spending the night in one of the lake area’s especially constructed shelters.

Walking on Lovns Halvø

At the protected site  Lovns Halvø you will find 20 kilometers of marked paths that guide you to the most interesting walking paths on the peninsula.  The paths wander through ravines with oak copses, along the coastal cliffs and through both forests and moorlands.  If you need a break you can find shelter from the wind on the beach and watch the sand martins fly in and out of holes in the cliffsides.

Livø – Car-free and Ecological

Livø is a quiet oasis in the middle of the fjord.  Here the untamed Danish landscape thrives; the island is a protected site and is completely without cars.  Experience unique variations in the landscape and the island’s extensive biodiversity, supported by Livø’s only farm, which is operated ecologically.

Watersports at Trend

On the beach at Trend you can leap into the blue waves with kitesurfing and windsurfing all year long.  If you prefer a less energetic means of encountering the water, the beach is also inviting for ordinary swimming for both adults and children.  The beach has shallow water that forms a perfect framework for both surfers and families with children.

Diatomite cliffs near Ertebølle

Ertebølle is worth a visit for several reasons.  Not only is its beach good for swimming, but if you take a short walk down the beach south from the swimming jetty you will encounter a stretch with ca. 20-meter-tall cliffs with clear-cut layers of diatomite and ash deposits.  The oldest layers are around 55 million years old.  The beach is rich in fossils, petrified trees, and sea creatures and is a must for geology and archaeology enthusiasts.

24 hours on the West Coast of Himmerland

A 90-kilometer-long west coast cannot be experienced in a single day.  But if 24 hours is all you have, here is a suggestion for an optimal use of your time.

The name Løgstør is mentioned for the first time in 1514, but in more recent times the town has been known as The City of Mussels due to its central location in the Limfjord mussel industry.  The town is rich in history and has an exciting market town atmosphere.

Effectively shielded from the nearest highway by 4-5 kilometers of sky-blue Limfjord waves is hidden one of the Himmerland coast’s best-kept secrets.  There are no cars on Livø and farming on the island is 100% ecological.

From Ice Age to Present

The natural and cultural environment of Vesthimmerland provides a unique glimpse into Denmark’s history over 55 million years — from fossils to Stone Age culture and Viking Age fortifications to medieval cloisters and 19th-century manor estates.

Ninety kilometers of west-oriented coastline provides ample opportunity to wrest a couple of days out of one’s vacation calendar in order to sunbathe on the beach while the little ones swim and play in the sand.
